Please find some information about the current reintroduction project of the ural owl (Strix uralensis). For further questions please contact the project manager Richard Zink through the menu item “contact” (below).

On the 19th of November Enrico Albertini, chief of MONTOWL has donated 5 Ural owls for our project. He is one of the most experienced specialist in breeding of rare birds in Europe. Montowl is a reproduction and conservation centre for rare bird species in norther Italy and has started to support the ural owl reintroduction in the Alps. Together with Albertini two other Italian collaborators joined the breeding efforts:
Fulvio Genero with the RISERVA NATURALE DEL LAGO DI CORNINO will care for a new breeding pair from now on and Giancarlo Macchiavelli has exchanged one of its owls with the breeding centre in Haringsee. Macchiavelli will participate in the international breeding network for the Ural owl and has offered to donate further offspring.
Cooperation with Croatia
News from 30th of September 2009: After several months of extensive preparations and und intensive cooperation with Austrian and Croatian authorities we were able to get three Ural owls from the Rehabilitations Centre (AWAP) close to Zagreb. We beliefe the three birds (2 females and one male) are of extraordinary value for the breeding program. All of them were seriously injured in nature and could not recover completely. Therefore they could not be released again but will help to improve the breeding stock from now on. Since the beginning of Austrian breeding efforts a total of 4 birds from Croatia, 2 birds from Slowenia and asingle from Slowakia could be included into our breeding program for the endangered species. At this point we would like to say thank you to Zoran Horvat, director of the centre in Croatia. It is a pleasure to cooperate with you.
